Stay Safe This Summer: Recognizing and Preventing Heat Stress

As temperatures climb, so does the risk for heat-related illnesses. Whether you’re working outdoors, enjoying summer activities, or participating in sports, it’s crucial to understand the signs of heat stress and how to respond quickly and effectively.

What Is Heat Stress?

Heat stress occurs when the body cannot cool itself efficiently in hot environments. This can lead to a spectrum of conditions, from mild discomfort to life-threatening emergencies. The most common heat-related illnesses include:

– Heat Rash – skin irritation from excessive sweating

– Heat Cramps – muscle spasms due to electrolyte loss

– Heat Exhaustion – a serious condition marked by fatigue, nausea, and heavy sweating

– Heat Stroke – a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate medical attention

Signs and Symptoms to Watch For

Heat Exhaustion

– Heavy sweating

– Dizziness or fainting

– Weakness or fatigue

– Nausea or vomiting

– Cool, moist skin

– Headache

Heat Stroke

– Body temperature above 103°F

– Confusion or altered mental state

– Seizures

– Loss of consciousness

– Skin may be hot and dry or still sweating profusely

If someone exhibits signs of heat stroke, call 911 immediately.

How to Prevent Heat Stress

– Stay hydrated – drink water regularly

– Wear lightweight, breathable clothing

– Take breaks in the shade or a cool place

– Avoid peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

– Acclimate gradually to high temperatures

First Aid for Heat Illness

If someone shows symptoms of heat stress:

1. Move them to a cooler environment

2. Loosen tight or heavy clothing

3. Apply cool, wet cloths to their skin

4. Fan the person to promote evaporation

5. Offer water if they are alert and able to drink

6. Call 911 if the person becomes unconscious or shows signs of heat stroke
