EMT renewal Minnesota 2026 is approaching quickly. If you’re certified with the Minnesota Office of EMS or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), the March 31 deadline is critical to maintaining your certification and staying eligible to work.

Here’s what you need to know about the renewal process and how Mid-Minnesota EMS Education can help.

Why EMT Renewal Matters

Renewal isn’t just paperwork—it’s about staying sharp, staying current, and staying eligible to work in the field.

  • For Minnesota Office of EMS certified EMTs: If you miss the March 31 deadline, your certification will lapse, and you won’t be allowed to work until it’s reinstated.
  • For NREMT-certified EMTs: Missing the deadline could mean completing a reentry process, including potential retesting.

EMT Continuing Education Requirements

Minnesota follows the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) model, which requires:

  • Location: Alexandria Fire Department
  • Dates: March 6–8, 2026
  • Format: In-person, instructor-led
  • Content: Covers all 20 hours of the NCCP National Component
  • Register here: NCCP 20 Hour
  • This course meets the standards set by the NREMT and the Minnesota Office of EMS. It is taught by experienced EMS professionals who bring real-world insight into every session.

To ensure a smooth renewal process, follow this recommended order:

  1. Submit your renewal application to NREMT first
  2. Wait for NREMT approval
  3. Then complete your renewal through the Minnesota Office of EMS

Do not wait until the last minute. Submitting early allows time for processing, and if you’re selected for a random audit, you’ll need to provide supporting documentation. Leaving enough buffer time ensures you won’t risk a lapse due to delays.

  • 40 hours of total continuing education for EMTs
    • 20 hours of National Component content
    • 10 hours of Local/State content
    • 10 hours of Individual content

What About State-Only EMTs?

If you’re certified only through the Minnesota Office of EMS and not the NREMT, your renewal process is handled entirely at the state level. You’ll submit all renewal steps and documentation directly to the Minnesota Office of EMS.
